The molluscs (class Mollusca) – which encompass amongst others the snails, shells and cephalopods – are one of the most successful classes in the animal kingdom. Their diversity of about 82,000 species is surpassed only by the insects. The species-richest class, whose representatives are incidentally the only one to settle in Austria, are the snails. It is to them that the exhibition "Stretch Our Your Feelers! Snails in All Their Glory" (May 17, 2019 to March 1, 2020) in the Oberösterreichisches Landesmuseum is dedicated.

With more than two million specimens, the collection of molluscs of Oberösterreichisches Landesmuseum is the second largest in Austria, after the Natural History Museum in Vienna. Collections in general are an important basis for the study of the fauna of the earth and belong to the international cultural heritage. The exhibition and the focus of the collection include a popular science brochure and two scholarly, richly illustrated works in which 23 Austrian authors participated.

Die Weichtiere (wissenschaftlich Mollusca, verdeutscht auch Mollusken), zu denen u.a. die Schnecken, Muscheln und Kopffüßer gehören, sind einer der erfolgreichsten Stämme im Tierreich. In ihrer Vielfalt von etwa 82.000 Arten werden Weichtiere nur noch von den Insekten übertroffen. Die artenreichste Klasse, deren Vertreter übrigens als einzige auch das Land besiedelt haben, bilden die Schnecken, weshalb ihnen die Ausstellung „Streck die Fühler aus! Schnecken in ihrer vollen Pracht“ (17. Mai 2019 – 1. März 2020) im Biologiezentrum des Oberösterreichischen Landesmuseums in Linz gewidmet ist.

Mit mehr als zwei Millionen Exemplaren ist die Mollusken-Sammlung des OÖ. Landesmuseums – nach jener des Naturhistorischen Museums in Wien – die zweitgrößte in Österreich. Sammlungen generell sind eine wichtige Grundlage für die Erforschung der Fauna der Erde und gehören zum internationalen Kulturgut. Zur Ausstellung und zum Sammlungsschwerpunkt erscheinen eine populärwissenschaftliche Broschüre und zwei wissenschaftliche, reich bebilderte Werke an denen sich 23 österreichische Autoren beteiligt haben.
