This is the first of a two-part fauna of the moths found in the vicinity of the Tawainese Nanheng Road, which is one of three major cross-island highways. After suffering severe typhoon damage in 2009, the road has been closed to traffic for 13 years. During this time, moth research team members of the Taiwanese Endemic Species Research Institute (ESRI), together with Mr Chien-Ming Fu, Mrs Wen-Hsiang Cheng, and Dr Mamoru Owada have conducted over 60 systematic investigations with the assistance from government agencies (including Jiaxian Construction Section, Directorate General of Highways; Yujiang Station, Chiayi Forest District Office, Forestry Bureau; and Yushan National Park Headquarters). They have collected moths at over 20 sites along Nanheng west from Meishan and east to Wulu.
After rigorous comparison and identification, more than 15,000 specimens belonging to 27 families and 1700 species of moths have been accumulated. To share this vast cache of results with academic communities and the public, ESRI is publishing the results in two bilingual books. All the identified species from the Nanheng Area are included. In addition, the book discusses the genera and species that are rare, uncommon or have no clear taxonomic explanation or previous bionomics. Several new taxa (including seven new species and one new subspecies) are described from Nanheng or other areas in Taiwan or Japan. Twelve species are newly recorded from different habitats in Taiwan. Altogether 22 moth families and 907 species are recorded and illustrated in this book. An additional note is given if the species does not occur in the Nanheng Area.
