NHBS Introduction to Habitats: Grassland
During spring, species-rich, unimproved grasslands is a hive of wildlife activity. Blanketed by wild flowers and tall grasses, they provide habitats for invertebrates and small mammals. These, in turn, are food for predators such as barn owls and kestrels. Other species such as lapwings and other ground-nesting birds will be nesting on shorter grassland, foraging for earthworms and insects. Wild flowers attract pollinators like bees and butterflies, as well as other insects such as the common field grasshopper, which feeds on grasses and other plants.
