When the Kite Builds... is an informative and comprehensive examination of the project to reintroduce red kites to England and Scotland. Mike Pienkowski, the chairmen of this project, describes why the decision was taken and how it was implemented, as well as examining the success of the experiment and exploring the outcomes from this success. Chapters cover how nestlings were collected and imported, how the kites were reared, the initial survival after release, education and public awareness, and much more.

Read our interview with Mike Pienkowski where we discuss how he became involved in this project, whether population recovery would've been possible without reintroduction, how the increase in red kites has impacted or enhanced the British countryside, and more. When the Kite Builds... was published in February 2023.
Dr Mike Pienkowski will be signing copies of his book at the NHBS stand, number S107 in the Swallow Marquee, at Global Birdfair on Saturday 15th July between 2 and 3pm.

World Rainforest Day 2023
Created by the Rainforest Partnership in 2017, World Rainforest Day is a celebration of the importance of healthy, standing rainforests for the climate, biodiversity, culture and livelihoods. Since 2021, there has been an annual World Rainforest Day Summit, bringing together organisations from all sectors to create a dialogue for action and resilient forest protection. Not only do rainforests store vast amounts of carbon, removing it from the atmosphere, this habitat is also home to over 50% of our planet's biodiversity.
Devon Wildlife Trust will soon begin creating an Atlantic rainforest after receiving a share of the £38 million Aviva fund. The new rainforest will become a reserve called Bowden Pillars Farm near Totnes, where our offices are based! The 30-hectare site has a 105-year lease which will allow Devon Wildlife Trust to plant two-thirds of the land with native species trees. This creation is part of a wider partnership centred on the area, with other aspects including establishing a regenerative farm. To learn more about rainforests, why not check out these two titles:

National Marine and Coastal Wildlife Code
The first national Marine and Coastal Wildlife Code has been launched in England, which will protect animals and habitats by helping people enjoy the coast responsibly. England's coastline contains vitally important habitats, including sand dunes, saltmarshes and a significant proportion of Europe's vegetated shingle beaches. The coastline also supports a number of key species, such as 95% of Europe's grey seal population and 25% of Europe's breeding seabirds. Similarly to the Countryside Code, this new code aims to act as a guide to help visitors to act responsibly in order to protect these key habitats and species.
