The Schwegler Dipper and Pied Wagtail Nest Box provides excellent protection against predators, making this box ideal for boosting breeding success or when undertaking restoration and construction work in breeding areas. Because it is secure against small predators it has been found to be more effective than natural nesting sites for ensuring survival of both adults and juveniles.
The box should be installed using the adjustable fixing bracket (supplied) under bridges and on vertical walls which are directly adjacent to naturally moving water. Boxes should be placed at least 0.5m above the high water line and preferably above deep, flowing water because dippers tend to dive into the water if threatened. For the pied wagtail, this box can also be used in wetlands. It is always advisable to clean the nest box after the breeding season (i.e. from late August onwards) as dipper nests in particular can become infested with parasites.
Built to Schwegler's exacting standards, the nest box is made from a plant fibre - wood concrete mix, resulting in an exceedingly durable, rot-proof and breathable material designed to mimic the properties of natural nest sites. Schwegler boxes will last up to 25 years.
