Red squirrels in the U.K. have declined drastically in the last century, mainly due to the loss of habitat and competition from the very successful American grey squirrel.
This Red Squirrel Nest Box is designed to provide a nesting habitat which is safe from predators such as pine martens. It is constructed from FSC timber and has both front and side entrance holes. A front shelf and front indentations allow for easy entrance and exit of the box and the angled roof means that rain will run off the top, keeping the interior dry. The nesting chamber is very deep and has an internal ladder.
This box should be sited in woodland at a height of 3-4 meters. It should be attached to a suitable tree using screws to secure through the back plate. Face away from direct sunlight and in a position which is protected from rain as much as possible. Bedding matter such as hay, straw or dry leaf litter, can be used to half-fill the box. The box is made from natural timber and does not require any treatment.
Please note: Breeding red squirrels are protected in the U.K. under the Wildlife & Countryside Act. A licence is required to inspect boxes and they should not be disturbed if they are occupied by red squirrels.
