About this book

New edition of the leading resource on arctic marine ecology with contributions from the world's experts on sea ice.

Sea Ice delivers insights into the very latest understanding of how sea ice is formed, how we measure (and model) its extent, the ecosystems that depend on sea ice, and the effect of climate change on its distribution. The book also discusses how sea ice influences the oceanography of underlying waters and the influence that sea ice has on the world's overall climate.

This newly revised and updated Fourth Edition looks at ice-based food webs and at the impact of geopolitics on arctic ecology as well as the increase in human activity in the arctic due to receding ice caps, from shipping to resource extraction and tourism.

Written by a team of more than 50 of the world's leading experts, Sea Ice includes information on:
- Sea ice thickness distribution and snow and surface processes on sea ice
- The short-term and long-term dynamics of Arctic versus Antarctic Sea ice
- Current methods of satellite remote sensing of sea ice
- The ecology of sea ice, from microbes to mammals to marine birds
- The cycling of contaminants across the ocean-sea ice-atmosphere interface

In its new edition, Sea Ice remains the leading multidisciplinary resource on the subject for all policy makers, researchers, and students with an interest in the polar regions and their role in the world's oceanic systems.

Reviews of previous editions:

"This very well presented book is a collection of papers describing some of the most valuable aspects of [sea ice] research. Sea ice is a whole new frontier of opportunities for, among others the fisheries and aquaculture sectors. This excellent book provides considerable food for thought."
Fishing Boat World

"[...] this is a beautiful book, not only in its appearance, but in its organization, which provides current information on sea ice to those of us interested in global warming, biodiversity and extreme environments. Therefore Thomas and Dieckmann are to be commended for organizing and editing this timely book."
Biodiversity and Conservation 13, 2004

"The books editors [...] have collected the most significant contributions of a team of international experts offering to the readers a well edited and integrated volume surely till today and over, the most exhaustive about sea ice."
Polar News

"The book Sea Ice provides the scientific community with an excellent source of reference on the biology of sea ice from micro- to macroscale as well as on physical models, large-scale characteristics as derived from satellite observations, and paleo reconstructions."
