The Slam Trap (an acronym for Sea, Land and Air Malaise) is a Malaise trap capable of floating on water, standing on the ground or being suspended. The trap is easily clipped to its supplied framework of shock-corded poles and is completely freestanding and self-supporting. It has been carefully designed to be simple to erect, making it easier to deploy several traps. It has four cross baffles so that flying insects can be collected from four sides making wind direction and sunlight less of a concern when it comes to positioning.
Suspending the trap in the air effectively turns the trap into an aerial malaise trap. Several Slam Traps can also be suspended in a vertical chain in order to survey at different heights simultaneously.
A collecting bottle at the apex of the trap collects insects that migrate upwards, and if trays of preservative are placed beneath it can also be used as a flight interception trap. It has a ventilation window on the collecting head which helps to optimise the catch. Also provided is a removable moth excluder at the collecting head entrance to prevent the entry of large insects such as Lepidoptera or Dragonflies.
