The SMM-U2 Grounding Bracket connects to an SMM-U2 microphone to protect the microphone from damage that could occur during an electrostatic discharge or electrical storm. A stainless steel screen covers the top of the microphone and this channels any electrical surges to the bracket and then on to a grounding wire that is connected to the bracket. The grounding wire runs down to an earth ground so that any electrical surge is thus deflected away from the microphone. It is recommended that this bracket is used whenever an electrical storm is forecast or if the microphone is to be mounted well away from the ground such as on a wind turbine or other tall structure. This bracket will not affect the quality of your recordings as the stainless-steel screen is transparent to ultrasound. A small amount of installation is required but this is straightforward and instructions are provided. Grounding wire is not included with the bracket and you will need to provide your own - this should be 12 gauge or thicker wire and less than 2 metres in length.
Please note: This sytem will also provide some protection for the SM4 or SM3 series of recorders, but note that the best protection for these is the Surge Supressor.
