Anjou and Touraine are two of the most beautiful historical regions in France, classified as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. In our minds, this geographical area is often associated with the castles of the Loire, wines and a mild climate. But it is also here that a stage of the Upper Cretaceous is defined: the Turonian. If the lower limit of the floor is now taken near Pueblo in the state of Colorado in the United States, the stratotype, located in France, retains all its heritage interest to the extent that it specifies the content.

This volume explains first of all the reasons which led to the nineteenth century Alcide d'Orbigny to choose the region "from Saumur to Montrichard" as a typical region of its Turonian stage. The progression of knowledge about the typical Turonian is summarized through the review of many publications. Different aspects are studied: the succession of layers consisting largely of tufa (a variety of limestone), old landscapes and palaeontological content. Turonian and Man also have a common history through the extraction of tufa as a building stone, especially for the castles of the Loire, but also in the use of underground quarries such as mushrooms farms and wineries. The heritage is finally valued through an inventory of preserved sites and collections.

L’Anjou et la Touraine constituent deux des plus belles régions historiques de France, classées au Patrimoine mondial de ­l’Humanité par l’Unesco. Cette aire géographique est souvent associée dans notre esprit aux châteaux de la Loire, aux vins et à une douceur climatique. Mais c’est également ici qu’est défini un étage du Crétacé supérieur?: le Turonien. Si la limite inférieure de l’étage est aujourd’hui prise près de Pueblo dans l’État du ­Colorado aux États-Unis, le stratotype, situé en France, garde tout son intérêt patrimonial dans la mesure où il en précise le contenu.

Ce volume explique tout d’abord les raisons qui ont conduit au xixe?siècle Alcide d’Orbigny à choisir la région «?allant depuis Saumur jusqu’à Montrichard?» comme région type de son étage Turonien. La progression des connaissances sur le Turonien type est résumée à travers la revue de nombreuses publications. Différents aspects sont étudiés?: la succession des couches constituées en grande partie de tuffeaux, les paysages anciens et le contenu paléontologique. Turonien et Homme ont également une histoire commune à travers l’extraction du tuffeau comme pierre de construction, en particulier pour les châteaux de la Loire, mais aussi dans l’utilisation des carrières souterraines comme champignonnières et caves vinicoles. Le patrimoine est enfin valorisé à travers un inventaire des sites préservés et des collections.
