The present work forms the second and last part of The Dermaptera of Africa, part 1 of which was published in 1973. Part II includes the family Carcinophoridae, and it is intended to be used along with part I. The present part follows the style of part I, but the descriptions are more detailed, and the male genitalia of all available species are figured, since the determination of most of the species finally depends on the structure of the male genitalia.
The present part contains 104 species of the Carcinophoridae, of which 29 are new and are described, together with four subspecies, of which three are new ; there are nine additional species to part I which have been described subsequent to 1973 ; there is one species omitted from part I owing to doubt as to its systematic position ; there are four new species described for the first time which are systematically included in part I; and there is one amendment to the systematic list in part I. Amendments to the distribution of two species in part I are also necessary. The total of African Dermaptera dealt with in both parts is 298 species. which should be considerably increased by future collecting.
