About this book

Explore, discover and identify every known species of New Zealand fish in this encyclopaedic and beautifully illustrated guide.

The Fishes of New Zealand represents the culmination of decades of collecting and taxonomic research by scientists based at New Zealand's national museum, Te Papa, in collaboration with specialists worldwide. It reveals the history, diversity and biogeography of the region's rich freshwater and ocean life across four cased, easy-to-navigate volumes.

Comprising thorough and accessible descriptions of each of the 1250+ species found in New Zealand waters, this unique title introduces many newly discovered and identified specimens, and over 140 species new to science. Each species features diagnostic, taxonomic, distribution and biological detail, accompanied by richly produced photographs, maps and illlustrations.

Volume 1 contains the introduction and supplementary matter, including, amongst others, sections on history of fish collecting and collections in New Zealand, geography and currents in the region, fish biogeography and diversity, methodology, pictorial keys and a checklist. The remaining three volumes contain the species accounts. Volume 2 (pages 1-576) deal with the lancelets, hagfishes, chimaeras, various shark orders, skates, rays, halosaurs, eels, sackpharynx fishes, herrings, carps, catfishes, trouts, smelts, galaxiids, dragonfishes, and lizard fishes. Volume 3 (pages 577-1152) deals with more lizard fishes, lanternfishes, opahs, beardfishes, cuskeels, cods, anglerfishes, mullets, silversides, needlefishes, killifishes, pricklefishes, alfonsinos and squirrelfishes, dories, pipefishes and seahorses, and mail cheeked fishes. Volume 4 (pages 1153-1748) deal with the large order of perch-like fishes (Perciformes), flatfishes and puffers.
