About this book

Language: Japanese with English summary and bilingual index with Japanese and scientific species names

This is the first Japanese book that introduces Japanese varieties of longhorn beetles and their various individual and regional mutations, and this book is scheduled to be completed in three volumes. It covers all members of the Disteniidae family and some of the subfamilies of the Cerambycidae, including Parandrinae, Prioninae, Spondylidinae, Lepturinae, Necydalinae, and a part of Cerambycinae.

A large number of specimens are shown on colour plates and mutations are explained in detail in the text, but the range of mutations varies by species and; therefore, only a small number of individuals are shown for species with few mutations. Upon examining a variety of Japanese longhorn beetles based on a large number of specimens one new species and 20 new subspecies from Japan and one new subspecies from Korea are described and many reclassifications are suggested.

In The Longhorn Beetles of Japan, the authors classified as many organisms as possible into as few species as possible; as a result, they downgraded 11 taxa that have conventionally been treated as species to subspecies. Additionally, they did not adopt subgenera in this book and only introduced them in the genus commentary.
