In The Spider Families of Europe / Die Spinnen-Familien Europas the extant and fossil European spiders – mainly the identification of their families and their diagnoses – are treated in two parts: One part is in German, which is more popularly treated and mainly for beginners, including a glossary; and a second part is in English and contains some more key characters and other details, diagnoses of European spider families, their distribution and diversity, as well as more information on fossil spiders in Cretaceous and Eocene – mainly Baltic – European ambers.
This book comes with a separate volume, entirely in German (Die Schönsten Spinnen Europas, by Sauer & Wunderlich [1997, ISBN: 3-923010-03-6], 300 pages), which is connected to the present volume and completes it. It contains ca. 450 colour photos of European spiders, their webs, prey and egg sacs as well as general remarks. In a short supplement some spiders, mainly from Portugal, are reported or described.
