About this book

The Soil & Land Use Survey of India (SLUSI) first published a Watershed Atlas of India on 1:1 million scale in 1990. The atlas followed a frame work of representing hydrologic units of various sizes with unique codes. With the advent of modern technologies such as remote sensing, geographic information systems, and relational database management systems they have enlarged the scope and use of the generated database generated not only for watershed development programmes but also for dissemination of information to local people via web services. New uses of digital spatial data necessitated the preparation of an updated, revised, digital version that was released on 31st May 2012. SLUSI subsequently had a huge response and tremendous demand for a printed version. The atlas contains 76 map plates accompanied by a compendium of watersheds, comprising 6 water resource regions, 37 basins, 117 catchments, 588 sub-catchments and 3,851 watersheds. It also provides methodological details and guidance on the utilization of the atlas for locating the watersheds and obtaining their extents with the corresponding administrative units.
