About this book

Wild Orchids of Assam is the first ever comprehensive photographic and taxonomic treatment with an up-to-date enumeration of the orchids of Assam, India. It provides the readers with a richly illustrated overview of the orchid wealth of Assam. It furnishes a general introduction, a brief description of Assam with climate, vegetation, botanical history of orchid study, habitat and orchid population, ethnobotany, threats and conservation of orchids within Assam; morphology of orchids followed by a detailed analysis of 396 specific and 10 intraspecific taxa belonging 101 genera of native orchids. All the species are enumerated with names of genera listed alphabetically and, again, species under each genus listed alphabetically. In the enumeration, generic names are provided with the author citation and generic description only, while species binomials are followed by author citation, common English name, species description, flowering and fruiting, habitat, status, distribution in Assam and general distribution.

This book should serve as a comprehensive identification guide not only for botanists but also for foresters, nurserypeople, and amateur orchid growers.
