The long-legged flies or Dolichopodidae are one of the largest groups in Brachycera. Now 226 genera and 6870 species are known from the world. They are easily identified by the metallic green body with slender legs. The adults and larvae are predacious, including some important predators of bark beetles and mosquitoes, except for larvae of Thrypticus phytophagous.
In the present book, the world catalog of Dolichopodidae is compiled. Fossil taxa are excluded, as all of the fossil Diptera were cataloged recently by Evenhuis (1994). The morphology of adults is outlined. The family Dolichopodae is classified into 17 subfamilies (including 2 new subfamilies) with the definition of each subfamily. A cladistic analysis of phylogenetic relationships among subfamilies of Dolichopodidae is presented.
