He is currently a senior research professor at the East China Sea Fisheries Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences. Since the early 1980s, he has been engaging in the research of the conservation biology and aquaculture of sturgeons and has won the second prize in China's National Highest Science and Technology Award for his research achievements on sturgeons. He is a member of the IUCN's Species Committee and the Sturgeon Expert Group. At present, he is leading China's national key research program on fisheries resources conservation and habitat restoration. He used to be the director general of the East China Sea Fisheries Research Institute, CAFS. Currently, he is the director of the Engineering and Technology Research Center for Fisheries Resources Enhancement and Ecological Restoration of the Yangtze River Estuary. He also serves as vice-president of the China Fish Society, vice-chairman of the Scientific Committee for Endangered Animal and Plant Species of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of China, and vice-chairman of the Scientific Committee for the Yangtze River Aquatic Organisms of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of China.
