About this book

Language: German

The Jena zoologist Ernst Haeckel is one of the most important but also most controversial natural scientists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As an enthusiastic supporter of Darwin, he worked to further and popularize the theory of evolution and became a symbolic figure in the ideological battles of his time.

As a natural scientist and university teacher, Ernst Haeckel was involved in a constantly expanding network of natural scientists who were not always like-minded. The first volume of the scientific correspondence contains letters from the period from April 1858 to October 1866 and covers Ernst Haeckel's early scientific network. These include, among others, Charles Darwin, Anton Dohrn, Carl Gegenbaur, Thomas Henry Huxley, Albert Kölliker, Eduard von Martens and Max Schultze. The letters document Haeckel's career path from a qualified medical doctor to full professor of zoology. In addition to providing insights into the real life of Haeckel and his correspondents, they provide information about the genesis of his works on radiolarians (1862), medusae (1865) and his book Generellen Morphologie (1866).

Summary in German:

Zu diesem gehören u.a.
