This textbook tells the geological history of metropolitan France from 2.1 billion years up to the present: its constitution and its gradual increase during the different orogenic cycles, based on field observations. The 390 illustrations (maps, figures and photographs) make it possible to comprehend and understand the path that leads from the observation of geological objects to syntheses, models and theories. Several geological disciplines (magmatism, metamorphism, tectonics, sedimentology, palaeontology, etc.) are used. For this new updated edition, a synthesis of geological knowledge on non-metropolitan territories that have remarkable geological diversity has been added: Guyana, New Caledonia, the West Indies, Kerguelen, Polynesia, and Reunion Island.

In this book, the geological map is considered a complementary approach to observation of on-the-ground facts that gradually, step by step, build a coherent history of the French territory. Geology is an essential discipline because it makes it possible to understand the history of a region, and to place it in a sometimes global geodynamic context, by appealing to the capacities of naturalistic observation, reasoning and abstraction. Over the last fifty years, geology has undergone a fundamental revolution with the development of unifying theories such as plate tectonics that allow a global approach to geological processes. However today, the understanding of geology is often disconnected from the facts on the ground. This is why most French universities have reintroduced a course on the geology of France in the program of their Licentiate or Master's, especially in the curriculum to train future teachers.

This book is intended primarily for students in Earth Sciences and Universities, as well as for secondary school teachers wishing to perfect their knowledge of the history of the geology of France.

Ce manuel raconte l’histoire géologique de la France métropolitaine de 2,1 milliards d’années jusqu’à l’actuel : sa constitution et son accroissement progressif au cours des différents cycles orogéniques, en se basant sur les observations de terrain. Les 390 illustrations (cartes, figures et photographies) permettent d’appréhender et de comprendre le cheminement qui conduit de l’observation des objets géologiques aux synthèses, modèles et théories. Plusieurs disciplines géologiques (magmatisme, métamorphisme, tectonique, sédimentologie, paléontologie, etc.) sont utilisées.
Pour cette nouvelle édition actualisée a été ajoutée une synthèse des connaissances géologiques sur des territoires non métropolitains, mais qui ont une diversité géologique remarquable : la Guyane, la Nouvelle-Calédonie, les Antilles, Kerguelen, la Polynésie, l’île de la Réunion.

Dans cet ouvrage, la carte géologique est considérée comme une approche complémentaire à l’observation des faits de terrain commentés pour, progressivement, étape après étape, bâtir une histoire cohérente du territoire français. La géologie est une discipline essentielle car elle permet de comprendre l’histoire d’une région, de la replacer dans un contexte géodynamique parfois global, en faisant appel aux capacités d’observation naturaliste, de raisonnement et d’abstraction.
