About this book

Language: German

This multi-volume work provides a comprehensive overview of the entire herpetofauna of Europe. For each species of reptile and amphibian found in Europe, detailed species-specific data and information have been compiled. As authors, specialists were acquired for the treatment of each species. The careful editing by the publishers leads to a great unity of the whole work.

This volume begins the treatment of the second large group of animals of the handbook, the amphibians. The proven pattern of subdivision of the species chapters was largely retained, but had to be modified with regard to the biology of amphibians, which differs greatly from that of the reptiles in many respects.

In particular, the amphibious way of life – the change from the larval life in water to the terrestrial life of the adults – led to an expansion of the topics covered. Oviposition, larval development and metamorphosis shift to the foreground, whereas other subsections. e.g. aggressive behavior, move to the background compared to the reptiles.

This first part of the volumes about the salamanders contains the European species of the Asiatic salamanders, the mudmuppies (family Proteidae) and lungless salamanders, as well as five genera belonging to the true salamander and newts (family Salamandridae).
