About this book

Language: French

Humans build new infrastructure (roads, buildings, recreational spaces, etc.) at a rate never seen before. While these projects stimulate economic and social development, they are also an important source of degradation and destruction of natural areas. In this period of ecological crisis, there is an urgent need to reconcile development with the conservation of biodiversity. Compensation has become a key issue in public policies to preserve biodiversity.

The impacts of development are increasingly being compensated for by the use of ecological engineering and restoration. But is this the solution? What are the actual impacts of biodiversity management projects and compensatory measures? How do you measure them? What is the scientific understanding of the feasibility and sustainability of countervailing measures? How do you make compensation an effective tool for preserving biodiversity?

The aim of this book is to provide a scientific and critical reflection on ecological compensation. Using ecological sciences, the author analyzes the compensation mechanism and provides insights to measure, evaluate, restore, compare, or monitor biodiversity. In doing so, he shows that compensatory measures face numerous limitations and are a very insufficient means of action in the face of the current rate of artificialisation of soils. He proposes a path towards the objective of "absence of net loss of biodiversity", based on the avoidance of impacts and an ethical and solidary use of natural spaces.

This book reviews the scientific and technical knowledge of a subject at the heart of sustainable development concerns. It is aimed at a wide audience: planners, decision-makers, managers of natural spaces, students of environmental sciences, and citizens interested in environmental issues.
