About this book

Language: Spanish

This book is the third and expanded edition of the first complete monograph of the Rubiaceae family (the fourth most diverse among the phanerogams with 670 genera and approximately 13,800 species), the fifth most important in the flora of Mexico represented by 113 genera and more than 670 species. During the period of 13 years since the first edition (2006), the number of treated genera increased from 103 to 113 and the species from 582 to 670 as a result of exploration of different naturalistic institutions and societies. The work also covers more than 3,000 synonyms and 180 illustrations, plus a phytogeographic review of the role and importance of the family in the extraordinary diversity of both the flora of Mexico, and the tropical flora and vegetation of the Caribbean.

Since the publication of the first edition in 2006, several detailed molecular and morpho-anatomical phylogenetic studies have led to results that allowed important taxonomic decisions to be solved, and discussed taxonomic problems, such as e.g. in the complexes of Bouvardia, Deppea, Psychotria and Rondeletia that appear as new in the pages of this book. The importance of this edition was the fact that, synchronously with the second edition of this monograph in 2012, a taxonomic elaboration of the Rubiaceae family was published in volume 4(2) of the Flora Mesoamericana using a traditional macromorphological concept that left out attention for most of the results of anatomical, submicroscopic and molecular investigations of the last 10–15 years.

Many of these traditional decisions are anachronistic – although accepted and supported several times by the World Checklist. In this version, the author publishes several dozen observations (Obs.) to make the necessary corrections.
