About this book

Language: French with bilingual summary in English and French

A large number of studies have been dedicated in whole or in part to Dactylioceratidae and reflect the divergent and often contradictory opinions of their authors on this complex family. None of these studies had so far made a synthesis of knowledge on the fauna of the different palaeogeographic domains.

The study of this family focused on the Toarcian fauna that constitutes the Dactylioceratinae subfamily. A very large number of genera and species have been described since the early 19th century, and the authors had to choose among them those who deserved to be validated. They relied on it for three kinds of arguments: morphological of course, but also stratigraphic and paleogeographic. They were therefore able to select 170 species belonging to 22 genera (or subgenera), all described and illustrated in this book.

This work of synthesis allowed the authors to highlight the almost total segregation between the forms of the NW European and Mediterranean provinces. It also allowed them to reconsider the question of the presence of rare Mediterranean forms in Southem France, and invited to consider the complex question of the phylogeny of this group.

This book addresses the collectors of fossils who will find the elements of determination of their specimens there, but also the scientists because of the great biostratigraphic interest of this group, the species of which have often been used as indicators of zones, sub-zones or horizons in the different palaeogeographic domains.
