Hundreds of nautiluses have been collected from the toarcian and aalenian sediments of the Lafarge quarries (southern Beaujolais) and from other deposits in the Lyon region, France. Most belong to species already described, mostly attached to the genus Cenocera. However, H. Tintant, the only French researcher to have published on this group of cephalopods, having examined this fauna, had recognized several new species there. It is partly from his handwritten notes that this work has been written.

While it is relatively easy to obtain documentation on ammonites, it is not the same for nautiluses, on which there are only a few isolated articles that are difficult to access, and no synthesis. Although limited in time (Lias and Lower Dogger) and in space (the Lyon Region), this work is the first to offer a panorama, which, though not exhaustive, is very representative of the genera and species of the European NW Province. Sixty-two species are cited, and thirty-two of them, the most commonly found, are described and illustrated. Six of these species are new, as is a particular genus, Belmonticeras. The type species created by Dumortier, from a fauna of La Verpillière, are also represented again.

Des centaines de nautiles not été récoltés dans les sédiments toarciens et aaléniens des carrières Lafarge (Beaujolais méridional) et dans les autres gisements de la région lyonnaise. La plupart appartiennent à des espèces déjà décrites, rattachées majoritairement au genre Cenocera. Cependant, H. Tintant, seul chercheur français à avoir publié sur ce groupe de Céphalopodes, ayant examiné cette faune, y avait reconnu plusieurs espèces nouvelles. C'én partie à partir de ses notes manuscrites que cet ouvrage a été écrit.

S'il est relativement aisé de se procurer de la documentation sure les ammonites, il n'en va pas de même pour les nautiles, sure lesquels il n'existe que quelques articles isolés et difficiles d'accès et aucun ouvrage de synthèse. Bien que limité dans le temps (Lias et Dogger inférieur) et dans l'espace (Région lyonnaise), cet ouvrag ℮le premier à offrir un panorama, non pas exhaustif, mais très représentatif des genres et des espèces de la Province NW européenne. Soixante deux espèces sont ainsi citées, et trente deux d'entre elles, les plus couramment récoltées, sont décrites et figurées. Six de ces espèces sont nouvelles, de même qu'un genre bien particulier, le genre Belmonticeras. Les types des espèces créées par Dumortier, à partir d'une faune de La Verpillière, sont aussi à nouveau figurés.
