Neophytes are plants that are not originally native to an area: the problematic balsam as well as the useful apple tree. On the basis of floras and herbaria, gardener and plant expert Norbert Griebl has identified all neophytes that have gone feral in Germany after 1492. In his comprehensive lexicon, he describes 473 main species and a similar number of minor species, together with their origin, past and present use, and the reasons for their spread and naturalization.
