About this book

Language: German

The study reported here examines the influence of low precipitation and increased nitrogen input on pine, oak and beech forest and forest ecosystems in north-east German lowlands.

The investigation of widespread pine, beech and oak ecosystems in the north-east German lowlands showed that persistent N inputs in connection with natural low precipitation have led to serious changes in the ecology and vegetation of the forests since the middle of the century. Existing basic relationships between structure and process in the forests were verified and quantified. This primarily affects the structure and dynamics of vegetation, net primary production, material and water flows. On this basis, the concept of forest ecosystem types was developed, with which it is possible to make the diversity of ecosystems manageable and thus to implement ecological research results across the board. The report concludes with examples of practical and also already transferred useful applications of the research.
