Orchideeën van de Benelux describes all the orchids of the Netherlands, Belgium and the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg in one book, including all extant and extinct species. They ordered logically in alphabetical order with all their peculiarities explained in great detail. Extensive attention is paid to the most important subspecies and varieties. The taxa are presented using their correct nomenclature, types, basionyms, identifying traits with the most important field characters, flowering times, habitats, and ecology, as well as their overall distribution. The distribution in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg is discussed per country using both historical and current information. The species descriptions are completed with numerous photographs of plants and their habitats, as well as all known hybrids. Shown for each main species are herbarium sheets of extinct species per country and distribution maps with a grid size of with 4 km² covering three periods: 1850-1950, 1951-1999, and 2000-2019.

The introduction extensively describes systematics, biology, ecology, and life cycle or the orchids of the Benelux. Additionally, several chapters deal with topics such as reintroductions, neophytes, protection and laws, declines and threats, orchird-rich landscapes and habitats, as well as phytogeographical districts and information on the distribution maps. On top of all this matters of taxonomy and nomenclature are treated, shortly discussing the biological species concept.

De Orchideeën van de Benelux behandelt de orchideeën van Nederland, België en het Groothertogdom Luxemburg in één uitgave. In dit werk worden alle voorkomende en uitgestorven taxa van de Benelux gepresenteerd. Zij zijn logisch op alfabetische volgorde geclusterd en met al hun bijzonderheden uitgebreid toegelicht. Daarbij komen ook vrij uitvoerig de belangrijkste ondersoorten en variëteiten aan bod. De taxa worden gepresenteerd met hun correcte naamgeving, type, basionym, kenmerkende eigenschappen met hun belangrijkste veldkenmerken, bloeitijd, biotoop en ecologie alsmede hun algehele verspreiding. De verspreiding in Nederland, België en Luxemburg wordt per land besproken met historische en actuele informatie. De soortbeschrijvingen worden gecompleteerd met vele fotografische opnamen van planten en biotopen alsmede alle bekende hybriden. Daarnaast per hoofdsoort een aquarel, herbariumvellen van uitgestorven soorten per land alsmede historische en actuele verspreidingskaarten met een rastergrootte van 4 km² in drie tijdvakken: 1850-1950, 1951-1999 en 2000-2019.

In de inleiding wordt vrij diep ingegaan op de systematiek en biologie, ecologie en levenscyclus van de orchideeën in de Benelux. Verder behandelen enkele hoofdstukken herintroductie en neofyten, bescherming en wettelijke bepalingen, achteruitgang en bedreiging, orchideeënrijke landschappen en biotopen alsmede de fytogeografische districten en informatie over de verspreidingskaarten. Daarnaast komen ook taxonomische en nomenclatorische aspecten aan de orde, waarbij ook kort op het soortbegrip wordt ingegaan.
