About this book

Language: Dutch

What is permafrost and why is it important in the context of climate change? This book is for everyone interested in nature and the climate, the ecosystems of the far north, and the soil and geology of the Netherlands. The book is aimed at a broader audience than specialists.

The large-scale consequences of anthropogenic global warming are becoming visible in the Arctic. The topic is very current, in part because of recent extremely high temperatures in Siberia. Because of rapid climate change in areas of permafrost there is much general interest in this topic. Rapid global warming can lead to, for example, soil instability and methane emissions.

Permafrost Nu en in de IJstijd also covers the topic of permafrost in Dutch soils. With some luck, you can see traces of permafrost dating back to the last ice age in freshly dug ditches. In the Dutch landscape and in several geologic monuments one can find traces of permaforst. Permafrost Nu en in de IJstijd explains what these look like.
