About this book

In 2001, Sharon Pincott traded her privileged life as a high-flying corporate executive to start a new life with the Presidential Elephants of Zimbabwe. She was unpaid, untrained, self-funded and arrived with the starry-eyed idealism of most foreigners during their early encounters with Africa. For thirteen years – the worst in Zimbabwe's volatile history – this intrepid Australian woman lived in the Hwange bush fighting for the lives of these elephants, forming an extraordinary and life-changing bond with them...Powerfully moving, sometimes disturbing and often very funny, Elephant Dawn is a celebration of love, courage and honour amongst our greatest land mammals. With resilience beyond measure, Sharon earns the supreme right to call them family.

I have already read this book by Sharon Pincott. It is an eye opener. That our elephants and those who spend dedicated time with them could be treated like this is gravely concerning, for our wildlife, for science and for the environment. Sharon was not completing a degree but certainly could have been. Instead, she chose to share her knowledge and concerns more widely during her time in Zimbabwe by using popular press, media, books and documentaries. How many of us would have stuck it out as she did for 13 very difficult years where her own safety was frequently at risk? I read, and learnt, and loved this read, as sad and concerning as it was in places, it was a pleasure to share in. Very highly recommended to an audience such as this.
