  • good text poor plates
By Keith 30 Oct 2020 Written for Hardback
The text seems to be very thorough but the plates are awful. The colour balance seems to be too red and the colours in general too garish.
    Pity otherwise a useful book.

  • the best bumble bee guide yet !
By Gary 26 Nov 2020 Written for Hardback
An excellent guide written with passion and authority, a new benchmark for bumble bee guides.
The images in the book are wonderfully produced and colourfully accurate making comparison between species an easier task.
packed with good life history information and great distribution maps for each species with good sections on mimics, flowers used, pollen-collecting and parasites plus lots more.

Media reviews

"[...] This is a really engrossing read and an invaluable reference for any avid bumblebee spotter."
– Paul Hetherington , Atropos 68, 2021

"This is the latest book to enter the now relatively crowded marketplace of bumblebee guides, which may leave one wondering what it can offer to the more seasoned hymenopterist – read on! [...] The book is inevitably a blend of old and new: much of the basic species information will be old news to more seasoned students of bumblebees, but there is sufficient augmentation by the author’s own observations and thoughts to provide something for everyone in a very readable format."
– Adrian Knowles, British Wildlife 32(5), April 2021
