About this book

Language: French

The fruit of Régine Fabri's passionate work, this book traces the history of the vasculum, a green or black tin box, which, for more than two centuries, accompanied generations of botanists in search of plants. Some of these are still found and today are the pride of large herbaria.

A scientific device born in Europe at the dawn of the 18th century, the vasculum quickly conquered the world. The boxes of great names in botany are preserved to this day and multiple portraits show the great diversity of the models used.

Originally reserved for professional botanists, the vasculum is also intriguing and worrying. It has sometimes resulted in its owner being suspected of stealing potatoes, poaching or smuggling, and even being thrown in prison. This beautiful object also attracted a large amateur public, as evidenced by its numerous illustrations and evocations in literature and in the works of artists. In the Belle Époque, decorated boxes also became a child's toy.

This book, richly illustrated with photos, images and quotes, traces the history of this obsolete accessory today exhibited in museums and highly prized by collectors, from its strange origin to its obsolescence, including its glory hours of service.
