Moray & Nairn is an area of richly varied habitats in the north-east of Scotland, extending from the Cairngorms mountains to the shores of the Moray Firth. Thirty years have passed since the publication of the first edition of Martin Cook’s The Birds of Moray & Nairn in 1992. The popularity of birding, and the volume of information, have increased hugely since that time and Martin has now written an updated edition of the book. This edition covers all species recorded in Moray & Nairn in much greater detail than before.
Information to the end of 2021 is included within the main texts and an appendix covers the most important records of 2022. The book is profusely illustrated with images taken by local photographers in Moray & Nairn, including for 271 of the 312 Category A-C species recorded in the area. Another chapter describes 21 of the best birdwatching sites in Moray & Nairn, giving access details (with maps) and key species likely to be found there. Other sections of the book cover changes in bird distribution and numbers, and migrant arrival and departure dates.
"Martin Cook has been local bird recorder for the region since 1984 and, in 1992, wrote the first book of birds in the Moray & Nairn recording area [...]. He also co-authored a local bird atlas, The Breeding Birds of North-East Scotland [...], which included Moray in its remit. Who better, then, to produce a new avifauna of the area? [...] The accounts are comprehensive, varying from one paragraph for species with just one record [...] to more than two pages for others [...] This book doesn’t just pick up from where the previous avifauna left off in the early 1990s: the full history of each species is explored. [...] This is therefore a well-rounded, high-quality book that will appeal to anyone looking to learn about and to see birds in this area. It is exceptional value, crammed full of useful, interesting and important information and liberally illustrated with photographs and charts."
