About this book

Language: German

Volume 6 of the Red List is the second part of Germany's updated nationwide Red List of fungi, this one covering lichens and myxomycetes. Both lists were last published in 1996 and are fundamentally revised and updated. The red list of lichens includes about 2,300 species. Although many lichens as symbioses of fungal and a photosynthetic algae endure the harshest environmental conditions, many species are endangered with extinction. Lichens clearly react to not directly recognizable environmental changes such as nitrogen and sulfur emissions.

The Red List of myxomycetes provides an excellent introduction to this unusual group of organisms. Its focus is on the overall species list with additional information on occurrence and distribution. The approximately 400 slime molds are an important, but usually invisible part of the material cycle as ecological counterparts to soil and litter-inhabiting bacteria. Only the fruiting bodies of these protists are macroscopically visible and often closely bound to specific microhabitats.
