This highly successful design provides vital nesting sites on artificial waterways, natural waterways lacking suitable banks or as an aid to boosting existing populations. The tunnel has been extensively tested and used for decades on building projects across Europe. The floor of the nest box and tunnel has a fine mesh grid to deter rodents. The nesting chamber is protected with a removable lid for cleaning. Constructed from lightweight concrete, it is air-permeable and able to compensate for temperature changes, preventing condensation in the nest box.
When using for kingfishers;
Many kingfishers tend to use two different tunnels for its first and second broods. It is therefore advisable to put at least two nest tunnels in the same steep slope, keeping them at least 70 cm apart.
When using for sand martins;
Colonies of never less than 12 breeding pairs of sand martins congregate in suitable areas, such as cliffs, and gravel and clay pits near moving water. If the aim is to attract new colonies, ensure that at least 12 nest tunnels are used. Larger colonies may contain over 100 breeding pairs.
