In India the Orissa coastline hosts four species of sea turtles, although the nesting of only one species is most noteworthy. Gahirmatha and Rushikulya are amongst the only few mass nesting beaches of the Olive Ridleys in the world, where more sea turtles nest than at any other spot on the earth. Over half a million Olive Ridleys nest at these rookeries along the Orissa coast between January and May every year.
This publication by the Wildlife Wing of the Forest Department of the Government of Orissa was written to inform the people about efforts made by the Department and other agencies over last two decades for conserving the species of sea turtle populations who spend more than half of the year in our coastal waters and nest on Orissa's beaches.
