This bibliography is intended as a guide to the regional (state and provincial) herpetofaunal literature of the United States and Canada up to December 31, 1999. Undoubtedly the list the authors have compiled, which includes 835 references, is incomplete, but nonetheless, they are confident that they have identified the majority of the significant regional contributions to the North American herpetofauna and trust that users will be able to trace even more obscure references, as well as more locally focused publications (county herpetofaunas, etc.) through the provided here. This should be facilitated by their inclusion of state/provincial herpetofaunal bibliographies, as well as checklists, keys, and more extensive treatments. The authors have limited their scope to include those published papers and books that deal primarily with single states or provinces or substantial portions thereof. Regional works of broader scope, covering up to three states or provinces have also been included. They have included all books and journal articles but have excluded most gray literature.
