The Swift Block is constructed in the UK from cast concrete using up to 75% recycled material from the Cornish China Clay Industry. Secure and longer lasting that a wooden box, it provides suitable habitat for swifts to nest. Featuring an internal nesting depression, a small entrance hole for added predator defence, and suitable for building into new structures or external retrofitting with the addition of a fixing kit, it's an attractive and stylish way to provide for swifts and other small birds.
The Swift Block should be positioned at least 5m from ground level avoiding south facing walls, on the side of a building that gets shade during the day, or under an overhang or eaves. It should be mounted away from windows and vents and predator access. Swift Blocks should also be placed in a spot with clear adjacent access, allowing high speed, direct flight entry. They do not require ongoing maintanence, but can be monitored using the removable front panel.
Swifts visit the UK for a few months each Summer, spending their winters on the wing in Africa. Generally, they mate for life and often will return to the same nesting site. They have experienced a serious decline in the UK over the last 20 years, with populations crashing by more than 50%. In order to preserve our remaining population, swift boxes are often included in building developments across the country.
PLEASE NOTE: Fixings for external mounting are not included, but may be purchased separetely here.
