About this book

Originally published in English in 1953 (translated from the original Russian book published in 1936), this memoir was a prelude to the Fishes of the Western North Atlantic series. The 1953 English version (here reprinted unmodified in paperback) featured a bibliography that was edited and newly enlarged by Virginia W. Odum for a survey of existing knowledge of biogeochemistry for the American Museum of Natural History.
