The study of butterflies has progressed largely during the thirty years which have elapsed since the publication of Bingham’s work in this series. As such it was felt that a revision of Bingham was necessary. lvluch new knowledge of the subject was acquired and the work of coordinating this has involved the almost entire rewriting of Bingham work. A further study of the work has resulted in new ideas of subject on nomenclature, in consequence a number of names have been changed. In accordance with the increase in our knowledge of the various groups, the classification has also changed. The arrangement of species is the same as adopted by Evans. All available information an the habit and life history of the species has been incorporated. The introduction has been considerably extended to cover the entire range of subject.
