The volume of fishes of The Fauna of Hebei is edited and compiled based on the materials of fish studies during 1877-1962, and on the scientific reports on fish resources in Bohai Bay and inland waters of Hebei Province by ichthyologists from colleges and institutions since the 1980s as well.
The book consists mainly of two parts: a general account and a systematic account. The general account comprises brief introductions to the waters in the area, the research history, the faunistic distribution and its classification. The systematic account describes 255 species of fish belonging to 72 families and 26 orders. Of them, 14 species of the class Chondrichthyes belong to 10 families and 5 orders, and 211 species of the class Osteichthyes belong to 62 families and 21 orders. The morphology, bionomics, and faunistic distribution of each species are described. Keys to orders, families, genera and species are presented. This volume also contains a new species, Acheilognathus binidentatus sp. nov. All illustrations given are drawn according to the specimens examined, referring to material recorded before.
