Diverse animals can be found inside ant colonies. Some have life histories that depend wholly or partially on the ants, and these species are termed "myrmecophiles". An additional guild of animals depends on the myrmecophiles themselves, and can thus be thought of as "myrmecophiles sensu lato". In The Guests of Japanese Ants, the authors document as comprehensively as possible the myrmecophiles that can be found in Japan. They also detail some other species that can be found in and around nests, but which associate with ants only facultatively.
