Golestan National Park has a surface area of c. 90,000 hectares and is one of the first Iranian protected areas founded as Almeh and Ishaki Protected area in 1957 and upgraded to the first Iranian national park in 1974. The park is situated in the eastern parts of Golestan, western parts of Northern Khorassan and northern parts of Semnan Provinces. The extreme habitat and climate differences between western (Hyrcanian deciduous forest) and eastern parts (saline steppe and Juniperus woodlands) has caused unique diversification in this park.
