The sacred chank is a shell, a marine mollusc species, which has been revered in India. The Indian Sacred Chank tries to explain the significance of the chank and the use of all its parts for human welfare. It throws light on this species that is of rare occurrence and has been preserved in temples and museums. Pointing to the many different varieties of the chank, it discusses growth, reproductive biology, captive rearing, sea-ranching migratory behaviour of the chank. It also brings out the trade and economic, religious and mythological significance of the chank such as the chank bangle industry in West Bengal, its use for the holy bath of the deities in temples and its use in marriage rituals.
