De Lang's field guide fills the gap that existed in our knowledge about Moluccan snakes. It presents a key (in English and Bahasa Indonesian) to identify specimens of all snake species (49 in total plus the enigmatic genus Acantophis, of which the number of species in the Moluccas has not yet been established). The species descriptions provide details on external morphology, colour, habits, habitat and distribution, and serve to identify specimens in an easy way.
The present field guide, presenting many colour pictures of live specimens and of habitats will certainly help to increase interest in the area and in its interesting snake fauna, that still needs more scientific study, as is clear from the text and from the fact that several large snakes and lizards only were described recently from the Moluccas, often based on specimens in the pet trade.
