About this book

Language: English with bilingual foreword in English and Dutch

This book is based on the Dutch Bomenboek voor Suriname, first published in 1963. The Bomenboek has been, and is still today, an invaluable aid to all those studying the Suriname flora and vegetation. However, for many years it has been out of print. On the 25th anniversary of the Alberta Mennega Stichting, the board decided to facilitate the publication of a second edition of the Bomenboek, to which Alberta Mennega had contributed so much, this time in English.

Timber Trees of Suriname focuses on the identification of Surinamese trees, based on field, vegetative, floristic and wood characteristics. It includes botanical descriptions, wood descriptions, illustrations and photos of 100 Surinamese commercial timber tree species, potential timber tree species and tree species protected by Surinamese forest law. It is the first book for Suriname with more than 400 photos to illustrate characters of tree species for easy identification in the field. The guide is intended for anyone interested in learning and identifying Surinamese timber trees, particularly for the Surinamese forest organizations and different timber companies in Suriname. While Timber Trees of Suriname focuses on Suriname, many of the treated species can be found in de adjacent countries Guyana and French Guiana as well, or have a Neotropical distribution, allowing the book to be applicable across the entire region.
