Without Jac. P. Thijsse (1865 – 1945) the Netherlands would have been a different country. A country without organisations such as Natuurmonumenten (the Dutch equivalent of Natural England) or the Vogelbescherming (the Dutch equivalent of the RSPB), a country without the Verkade albums (a series of books in which to glue collectible pictures that were distributed for free with Verkade confectionery, available between 1903-1940, which became a national treasure – Thijsse wrote the text for these albums), and a country without the Flora, an illustrated flora to the Netherlands to which Thijsse contributed. Without Thijsse, the Netherlands would have been a country with less nature and, worse, less desire for an unspoiled landscape. The Naardermeer and other famous natural areas, wooded banks, bird-friendly pastures, meandering streams, and even the Amsterdamse Bos (or Amsterdam Forest, a landscape park in the municipalities of Amstelveen and Amsterdam) – the Netherlands owes all these things to Thijsse, who was a founder of nature conservation in this country.

Jac. P. Thijsse: Natuurbeschermer en Schrijver is a penetrating portrait of an affable but unyielding nature propogandist, a naturalist without equal, and a gifted writer.
