This special issue of Fundamental and Applied Limnology contains the proceedings of the 10th Central European Diatom Meeting. This conference was organized by MTA Centre for Ecological Research and Hungarian Natural History Museum and was held from 20 to 23 April 2016, in Budapest. A total of 88 scientists representing 22 countries mainly from Europe participated in the meeting, but there were also guests from the USA and Mexico. Four plenary lectures, 23 oral and 39 poster presentations were given in the following sections: Effect of climate change on aquatic ecosystems with special attention to diatoms; Diatoms in biomonitoring; Molecular biology of diatoms; Diatoms in extreme habitats; Taxonomy, floristics; Database, collection. Special attention was paid to the climate change and the summarizing developments and challenges of the European Water Framework Directives.
