Landmark
by bjorn ulander in Sweden
This is a landmark in south-american ornithology. Its a logical follow up of the fine guyra birdguide published two years earlier. And contains the work of guyra during ten years. Its a a description of 57 ibas in 6 ecoregions. Its somewhat an ornithological journey from the dry chaco in the northeast and pantanal in the north throught humid chaco, cerrado and atlantic forest down to the pampas and wetlands in the south. Its a very impressive work, made by a long list of experts in each field. The ibas(important birdareas) are analized in different criterias of their values as migration-congregation-and edangered habitat place. The complexities of ibas are taken further in wider perspectives with guyras motto;working for birds and people. Possibilities and motivation for local residents and landowners to take part of it all,are discussed-Excluding the big parks in the northwest, nearly all reseves are unguarded remnants in agricultural land. This is naturally the only right thing to do.In order to strengthen the survival of unique habitats and their glorious forms of life.Wich also is the main aim of this publication.

Theres goals set up and discussions for instance covering socioeconomic suggestions to eliminate human-induced extinctions in years to come. Examples of flora and fauna are included in each chapter and this is a big plus. Information symbols about place to stay,or eat,and historical sighs and landuse etc are also included for each chapter as symbols. Reading this book can sometimes be like balancing on a high wire. One actually feels the huge difficulties guyra faces. With 1% of the people owning a mayority of the land and poverty hungers for land to use. Theres a picture-part with fine photos from nearly all sites. From close-ups of birds in the mud to very impressive arial views of huge palmforest disapearing in the horizon. In waiting for an english version, theres an extended summary in english. Altogether this volume is a highly recommended exellent documentation of the wildlife and preservation-ideas in Paraguay.
