About this book

Language: English

The Western Ghats is one of the two hotspot areas of India. It is a chain of mountains 1600 km in length running parallel to the west coast of Peninsular India covering the states of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Southern Gujarat.

The current knowledge on the biodiversity of the Western Ghats of Maharashtra is based on the data collected by various research teams from various departments, institutes, universities and college professors and personnel from non-governmental organizations, who have expertise in their own field. It is very difficult to prepare a conservation strategy if we do not know what we have with us, where, and what is to be conserved. Without this basic knowledge, how can one decide on prioritization for conservation? This book is the first step towards bridging the gap in our knowledge. This report is aimed at sensitizing, apprising and familiarizing both specialists and the general public. It will also be useful to policymakers, voluntary organizations, industrialists and the government. This will help in solving the issues of biodiversity conservation along the Western Ghats of Maharashtra.
